'As poor as a church mouse'

Have you ever heard someone saying they are 'as poor as a church mouse'? Very strange. Can a mouse be poor? The meaning comes from the fact that some mice live in buildings. In a house they can find small pieces of food. Food which people drop by accident or forget to put away. But what about a mouse that lives in a church building? No-one lives there, so there will not be much food. A church mouse is poor, because it has nothing to eat. So a person who is 'as poor as a church mouse' may need a good meal from a friend.
